What to say when you don't know what to say on camera

Almost everyone who sits down to record a message for their family hits the same wall: the camera turns on, and their mind goes blank. It is not a lack of love. It is the pressure of trying to say something worthy of the moment. Here is how to get past it.

Stop trying to say everything

The freeze comes from thinking this is your one chance to summarize a whole relationship. It is not. You can record as many messages as you like. Once you accept that this video only has to say one thing, the pressure drops and the words come.

Start with a sentence, not a speech

You do not need an opening line worthy of a film. Start with something almost boringly direct:

• "I wanted to record this so you'd always have it."
• "There's something I've never said out loud, so I'm saying it now."
• "Let me tell you about the day you were born."

Talk to one person

Do not talk to "everyone." Picture a single person watching, and speak to them by name. The message immediately becomes warmer and easier, because you are no longer performing to a crowd. You are having a conversation.

The stumbles, the pause where you get emotional, the moment you laugh at yourself: those are not mistakes. Those are the parts your family will love most. Do not re-record to smooth them out.

1. Say who you are talking to and why you are recording.
2. Tell one story or share one piece of advice.
3. End by telling them what they mean to you.
