Why a video says what a photo cannot

We have never had more photos and never felt more sure they are not enough. A camera roll with ten thousand pictures can still leave you unable to remember exactly how someone sounded. That is because a photo saves a face, and a video saves a person.

What a still image leaves out

A photograph holds a moment but drops everything around it: the voice, the pauses, the way someone leaned in before they said something they meant. Those are the parts the mind loses first and misses most.

Motion and sound carry personality in a way stillness cannot. A three-second clip of someone laughing tells you more about who they were than a hundred posed portraits.

Why the voice matters most

Of all the senses, sound fades fastest from memory. Within a year or two of losing someone, most people can no longer reliably hear them in their head. A recording gives that back. It is the reason families replay a loved one's voice far more than they revisit photographs.

You do not need to perform

The instinct is to treat video like a production. It is not. The most powerful legacy videos are plain: someone sitting in their kitchen, talking the way they always talk. No script, no lighting, no second takes.

Keep the person, not just the picture
