Why a video message to your brother for his graduation matters
Your brother remembers the same house, the same parents, the same arguments. A recorded message is a way to say you are glad he was there. Graduation marks the end of one thing and the start of something nobody can see yet. A message from you can sit right in that gap.
Keep it short. He will have a dozen people to see that day, and a two-minute message gets watched twice. Keep it short. He will not watch a long one, but he will watch a short one twice.
Three angles to take
Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.
The work you saw
Name one late night, one hard semester, one moment he nearly quit and did not. Tell him you saw it. That is the sentence graduates keep.
Your own graduation
Tell him what you were like the day you finished school, or what you wish you had known. It turns advice into company.
The witness
Tell him what it meant to have someone who went through the same childhood. Name one moment only the two of you remember.
12 prompts to get you talking
Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your brother; half are about a graduation.
- 01What is a memory only you and your brother share?
- 02What was he like on the first day of school, and what is he like now?
- 03What is the argument you both still laugh about?
- 04What is one piece of advice about work or study you wish you had been given at this age?
- 05What is a hard stretch he helped you through, even quietly?
- 06What did he learn in these years that had nothing to do with classes?
- 07What do you want his kids to know about their dad?
- 08What do you want him to hear from you on the morning of graduation?
- 09What do you admire about the man he turned into?
- 10What do you hope he gives himself permission to not know yet?
- 11What did he do for you growing up that you never thanked him for?
- 12What quality of his will matter more than any grade?
A sample 60-second script
Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.
Hi [name]. It is graduation day, and I wanted a minute of it that was not about parking or photos.
I watched you [one specific hard thing he did to get here]. I do not think you know how much I noticed.
What I am proud of is not the diploma. It is [one quality: how he kept going, how he helped a friend, how he handled a setback].
About what is next: [one line of permission or encouragement].
Congratulations. I love you. Go get your picture taken.
When to deliver it
This kind of message is usually delivered on a specific date.
If the graduation date is on the calendar, schedule the message for that morning. If your brother is years away from graduating, you can still record it now and set the date when it is known, or keep it on hold and release it yourself the week of.
Because dated messages are delivered no matter what, a graduation message recorded early is also a quiet way to make sure you are present for a day you might otherwise miss.
Record it while the words are fresh
Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.
Common questions
My brother and I are not close. Is a video message for his graduation still worth recording?+
Often it is exactly the thing that helps. Keep it short, keep it kind, and do not try to settle old accounts. One honest sentence about what he means to you can do more than years of silence.
Can I record one graduation message for my brother and reuse it for the next graduation?+
You can, but a short new one for each milestone usually means more. Many families record a few minutes for high school and another few for college, each scheduled for its own date.
What if I get emotional while recording?+
Keep going. The messages people treasure are the honest ones, and a cracked voice is honesty. You can also pause, rest, and continue later in the same message.
Is it free to start?+
Yes. You can record and save your first message for free. Scheduled delivery dates and longer videos are part of the paid plans. Receiving a message is always free and does not require an account.
