Why a video message to your daughter for her bat mitzvah matters
A daughter hears a lot of instructions growing up and not nearly enough of what her parent actually thinks of her. A video message fixes that ratio. A bat mitzvah is a girl standing in front of her community and taking something on. A video message from you is a private blessing to go alongside the public one.
Connect her to the women who came before: a grandmother who would have been in the room, a tradition the family kept through hard years. Avoid advice unless she asked. The message that lands is the one that simply says what she means to you.
Three angles to take
Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.
What taking on responsibility actually means
Say one plain thing about what being responsible looks like in daily life: showing up, keeping your word, being kind when nobody is watching.
The blessing
Whatever form it takes in your family, give her a blessing in your own words. It is the part she will watch again at twenty and forty.
The moment you knew who she was
Describe one specific moment when you saw her character clearly for the first time, a choice she made, a kindness, a stubborn stand. Tell her that is when you knew.
12 prompts to get you talking
Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your daughter; half are about a bat mitzvah.
- 01What is something she did that made you prouder than you let on?
- 02What did she do in the last year that showed you she was growing up?
- 03What do you most admire about the woman she has become?
- 04What does responsibility look like in your family, in everyday terms?
- 05What was the first thing you noticed about your daughter that was entirely her own?
- 06Who in the family would have loved to be at this bat mitzvah, and what would they have said?
- 07What do you want her to remember about how you felt the day she was born?
- 08What do you want her to remember about this day when she is grown?
- 09What is a trait she got from you that you hope she keeps, and one you hope she drops?
- 10What tradition do you hope she carries forward?
- 11What do you want her to know about choosing the people she keeps close?
- 12What do you admire about how she treats her friends or siblings?
A sample 60-second script
Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.
[Name], mazel tov. Three things, quickly, because I know you have a party to get to.
One: [what you admire about her].
Two: [one piece of advice about being responsible].
Three: [a blessing].
I love you. Go dance.
When to deliver it
This message can be delivered on a date, held until you release it, or tied to your check-in.
If the date is set, schedule the message for that morning. If your daughter is still small, record it now and set the date when it is known, or keep it on hold and release it yourself the week of.
Grandparents sometimes record a bat mitzvah message years early, so that if they are not there for the day, the message still is. A dated message is delivered on its date no matter what.
Record it while the words are fresh
Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.
Common questions
Should a video message to my daughter for her bat mitzvah include advice?+
A little, if it is specific and kind. Most daughters say the part they replay is the part where a parent simply says what they see in her. Lead with that, add one piece of advice if you must, and stop.
Can I record a bat mitzvah message for my daughter years before the date?+
Yes. Record it now, keep it on hold or set the date when it is known, and it stays sealed until that morning. You can re-record it as the years pass if you want the version delivered to be recent.
Can anyone else see the message before it is delivered?+
No. The video stays private and sealed until it is delivered to the person you named. Nobody, including our team, can watch it before then. After delivery, only the recipient can view it, and they can save their own copy.
How long should the video message be?+
Two to four minutes is plenty. A short message that sounds like you is worth far more than a long one that does not. If you have more to say, record a second message rather than one long one.
