What to say

What to say in a video message to your granddaughter for when you are gone

A short, honest video message to your granddaughter for when you are gone is one of the few gifts that gets better with time. Here is how to find the words, with prompts and a sample script.

Why a video message to your granddaughter for when you are gone matters

A granddaughter gets a version of you that her parents never did: the patient one, the one with time. A video message lets her keep that version. A message for after you are gone is the one most people mean to record and never do. It does not have to be a goodbye. It can simply be you, talking to your granddaughter, on an ordinary day.

You can add more over the years. Think of it as the first of several, not the only one. Say her name and say what you see in her. Grandchildren rarely hear that from a grandparent directly.

Three angles to take

Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.

The blessing

Whatever your tradition, end with a blessing. A hope for her life, said once, in your voice, is the part she will play on the hard days.

What you want her to stop worrying about

Name the thing you know she will carry after you are gone, guilt, a regret, a question, and release her from it, in plain words.

The family thread

Tell her about one person in the family she never met, and which part of that person you see in her. It gives her a place in a longer story.

12 prompts to get you talking

Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your granddaughter; half are about after you are gone.

  1. 01What did she say or do as a small child that you still laugh about?
  2. 02What do you want her to stop feeling guilty about?
  3. 03What is a story about her parent as a child that she would love to know?
  4. 04What family story will be lost if you do not tell it now?
  5. 05What is a family recipe, song, or tradition you want her to keep?
  6. 06What did she give you that she may not realize?
  7. 07What do you most hope for her life, said in one sentence?
  8. 08What do you want her to hear in your voice on the hardest day?
  9. 09What do you want her to remember about your house?
  10. 10What is one story about her that only you know?
  11. 11Which relative she never met does she remind you of, and how?
  12. 12What do you believe about what matters, said simply?

A sample 60-second script

Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.

Hi [name]. If you are watching this, I am gone, and I want the first thing you hear from me to be ordinary. So: hi. It is me.

I am recording this [when, in what setting]. Nothing is wrong. I just wanted you to have this.

I want you to know [the one sentence you most need her to hear].

I remember [a story about her that only you can tell].

Do not carry [the thing you want to release her from]. Live your life. I love you, and I always will.

When to deliver it

This kind of message is usually delivered by the check-in rather than by a date.

This message is built for the check-in. You check in on a simple schedule, and if you stop responding and miss the reminders over the grace period, the message is delivered to your granddaughter. Nothing is sent while you are here and checking in.

You can also name a trusted person who can confirm the delivery, and you can re-record or add to the message as the years pass. Many people record a fresh one every year or two, so the version delivered is recent.

Record it while the words are fresh

Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.

Common questions

My granddaughter is still very young. Can I record a message for when you are gone now and have it delivered when she is older?+

Yes. That is one of the main reasons the service exists. Record it today, set the delivery date for the milestone, and it stays sealed until then. Nobody, including our team, can watch it before delivery.

Is a video message for when I am gone the same as a will?+

No. Shtello Legacy is for personal messages, not legal documents. It does not replace a valid will. It is the part a will cannot do: your face and voice, saying the things that matter to your granddaughter.

Can anyone else see the message before it is delivered?+

No. The video stays private and sealed until it is delivered to the person you named. Nobody, including our team, can watch it before then. After delivery, only the recipient can view it, and they can save their own copy.

How long should the video message be?+

Two to four minutes is plenty. A short message that sounds like you is worth far more than a long one that does not. If you have more to say, record a second message rather than one long one.
