Why a video message to your grandson for his wedding day matters
You have watched your grandson grow up from a distance that lets you see him clearly. A recorded message tells him what you saw. Wedding toasts are for the room. A video message is for him alone, and it can say the things a toast cannot.
Speak about the marriage, not just the wedding. The day passes; the marriage is what the message is really for. Tell him one story about the family that he has never heard. It gives him a place in something bigger.
Three angles to take
Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.
What you hope the marriage is like
Skip the wedding and talk about the years after. Name one thing you hope he and his partner protect, and one thing you hope they forgive each other for quickly.
The men before him
Tell him about his great-grandfather or another man in the family he never met, and which part of that man you see in him. It gives him a line to stand in.
What a long marriage actually takes
If you have been married a long time, say one honest thing about what kept it together. If you have not, say what you learned from watching one.
12 prompts to get you talking
Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your grandson; half are about a wedding day.
- 01What skill or habit do you hope he picks up from you?
- 02What is the best marriage you ever witnessed, and what made it work?
- 03What is a story about his parent as a child that he would find funny?
- 04What family story about love or weddings do you want him to carry?
- 05Which man in the family he never met does he remind you of?
- 06What would you tell him about the first hard year?
- 07What did he do as a small boy that showed you his character?
- 08What do you remember about the day he told you he was getting married?
- 09What is the one sentence you want him to hear from you when he is grown?
- 10What do you want him to remember about this morning, years from now?
- 11What did you think the first time you held your grandson?
- 12What is one thing you hope he never stops doing for his partner?
A sample 60-second script
Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.
Good morning, [name]. I am recording this [when you are recording it], and I wanted it to be waiting for you today.
The thing I want you to know is [the one sentence you most want him to hear].
I say that because of [a memory that proves it: a day he showed his character].
For the marriage: [one hope, one piece of advice].
That is all. Have the best day of your life. I love you.
When to deliver it
This message can be delivered on a date, held until you release it, or tied to your check-in.
If the wedding date is set, schedule the message for that morning and it arrives before the day starts. If the date is not set yet, or your grandson is not engaged, record it now and keep it on hold. You can release it yourself the moment the day is announced.
Some people also record a wedding message for the check-in, so that if they are not here for the wedding, the message is delivered anyway. Nothing is sent until you choose, or until your check-in lapses after the grace period.
Record it while the words are fresh
Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.
Common questions
My grandson is a child now. Can I record a message for his wedding day and have it delivered years from now?+
Yes. Record it today, choose the delivery date for the milestone, and it stays sealed and private until that morning. If the date is not known yet, keep it on hold and a parent can release it when the time comes.
What if my grandson is not engaged yet?+
Record the message now while you have the words, and keep it on hold. You can set the date later, or release it yourself the week of the wedding. It stays private and sealed until then.
Is it free to start?+
Yes. You can record and save your first message for free. Scheduled delivery dates and longer videos are part of the paid plans. Receiving a message is always free and does not require an account.
Can I change the message later?+
Yes. You can re-record or delete it any time before it is delivered. Once a message has been delivered, it cannot be unsent.
