Why a video message to your brother for his wedding day matters
Brothers communicate in shorthand, and most of it is teasing. A video message to your brother says the direct version, once, in a form he can keep. On a wedding morning, nobody has time for a long talk. A recorded message gives your brother a few minutes of you that do not compete with the schedule.
Speak about the marriage, not just the wedding. The day passes; the marriage is what the message is really for. Then say the plain thing. He will not expect it, which is why it will land.
Three angles to take
Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.
What a long marriage actually takes
If you have been married a long time, say one honest thing about what kept it together. If you have not, say what you learned from watching one.
Who he is now
Tell him what you admire about the man he became, with one example. Brothers rarely hear it from each other.
What you hope the marriage is like
Skip the wedding and talk about the years after. Name one thing you hope he and his partner protect, and one thing you hope they forgive each other for quickly.
12 prompts to get you talking
Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your brother; half are about a wedding day.
- 01What is a hard stretch he helped you through, even quietly?
- 02What is the best marriage you ever witnessed, and what made it work?
- 03What did he do for you growing up that you never thanked him for?
- 04What would you tell him about the first hard year?
- 05What is the argument you both still laugh about?
- 06What family story about love or weddings do you want him to carry?
- 07What is the one sentence you would want him to hear if you could not be there?
- 08What do you remember about the day he told you he was getting married?
- 09What do you hope he forgives you for?
- 10What do you admire about the person he chose?
- 11What is a memory only you and your brother share?
- 12What is one thing you hope he never stops doing for his partner?
A sample 60-second script
Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.
Hi [name]. I wanted you to have something for his wedding day that was not a toast and not a card. Just me, talking to you.
I keep thinking about [a moment you remember from his childhood]. I did not know then that it was telling me who you would become, but it was.
Watching you with [partner's name], I see [one true thing you notice: how he laughs, how he listens, how calm he is].
Here is the one thing I want you to keep: [one piece of advice about marriage, said plainly].
I love you. I am so glad I got to see this day. Go enjoy it.
When to deliver it
This message can be delivered on a date, held until you release it, or tied to your check-in.
If the wedding date is set, schedule the message for that morning and it arrives before the day starts. If the date is not set yet, or your brother is not engaged, record it now and keep it on hold. You can release it yourself the moment the day is announced.
Some people also record a wedding message for the check-in, so that if they are not here for the wedding, the message is delivered anyway. Nothing is sent until you choose, or until your check-in lapses after the grace period.
Record it while the words are fresh
Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.
Common questions
My brother and I are not close. Is a video message for his wedding day still worth recording?+
Often it is exactly the thing that helps. Keep it short, keep it kind, and do not try to settle old accounts. One honest sentence about what he means to you can do more than years of silence.
What if my brother is not engaged yet?+
Record the message now while you have the words, and keep it on hold. You can set the date later, or release it yourself the week of the wedding. It stays private and sealed until then.
Do I need special equipment to record it?+
No. Any phone, tablet, or computer with a camera works, in the browser, with nothing to install. Find a quiet spot with light on your face, prop the phone up, and talk.
Can I change the message later?+
Yes. You can re-record or delete it any time before it is delivered. Once a message has been delivered, it cannot be unsent.
