Why a video message to your grandson when he has his first baby matters
Grandparents can say things to a boy that his parents cannot. A short message to your grandson can be the steady voice he keeps for later. When your grandson becomes a parent, he will suddenly understand things about you that he never could before. A recorded message can meet him there.
Tell him about his own first weeks, or his parent's. It connects the exhaustion to something older and gentler. Say what you admire about him, with one example. Boys remember examples.
Three angles to take
Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.
You are doing better than you think
Say it directly. New parents need exactly one person who has been there to say that nothing is wrong with them. Be that person, in a recording he can replay.
What you would tell him at twenty
Pick the one thing you wish someone had told you as a young man and say it plainly, with no lecture around it.
The night he was born
Tell him what it was like when he arrived, or what you remember of his earliest weeks. He is about to understand that story for the first time.
12 prompts to get you talking
Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your grandson; half are about a first baby.
- 01What is the one sentence you want him to hear from you when he is grown?
- 02What does he not need to worry about, in your experience?
- 03What skill or habit do you hope he picks up from you?
- 04What do you want the baby to know about him, years from now?
- 05What do you hope he is gentler with himself about than you were?
- 06What family tradition would you love to see continue with this child?
- 07What is a story about his parent as a child that he would find funny?
- 08What is one thing about his character that will make him a good parent?
- 09What did you think the first time you held your grandson?
- 10What did your own parents get right that you hope he repeats?
- 11What did he do as a small boy that showed you his character?
- 12What do you remember about the first week after a baby in your own life?
A sample 60-second script
Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.
[Name], congratulations. I recorded this [when], and I wanted it to reach you when the baby came.
Nobody tells you [one honest thing about new parenthood]. So I am telling you.
The thing that will make you a good parent is [one quality of his, with an example].
To the baby, if you ever watch this: [one sentence to the child].
I am so happy for you. Call me when you come up for air.
When to deliver it
This message can be delivered on a date, held until you release it, or tied to your check-in.
If the due date is known, you can schedule the message for a day or two after. Many people prefer to keep it on hold and release it themselves once the baby has arrived, so the timing is right.
If you want the message to reach your grandson at his first baby even if you are no longer here, record it for the check-in as well. If you stop checking in, the message is delivered after the grace period, and your grandson hears from you at the moment he most wants to.
Record it while the words are fresh
Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.
Common questions
My grandson is a child now. Can I record a message for when he has his first baby and have it delivered years from now?+
Yes. Record it today, choose the delivery date for the milestone, and it stays sealed and private until that morning. If the date is not known yet, keep it on hold and a parent can release it when the time comes.
My grandson does not have children yet. Should I still record a first-baby message?+
Yes, if the thought moves you. Record it now, keep it on hold, and release it when the baby comes. If you are not here by then, a trusted family member or the check-in can deliver it for you.
Is it free to start?+
Yes. You can record and save your first message for free. Scheduled delivery dates and longer videos are part of the paid plans. Receiving a message is always free and does not require an account.
Can anyone else see the message before it is delivered?+
No. The video stays private and sealed until it is delivered to the person you named. Nobody, including our team, can watch it before then. After delivery, only the recipient can view it, and they can save their own copy.
