Why a video message to your grandson in case something happens to you matters
A grandson usually gets your jokes and your stories, but rarely the direct words. A video message gives him both, in a form he can keep. Most people have thought, at some point, what would he need to hear from me if something happened? This page is about recording that answer while nothing has.
Keep it practical and warm. Say where the important things are if you want, but mostly say what he means to you. Tell him one story about the family that he has never heard. It gives him a place in something bigger.
Three angles to take
Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.
The thing you never got around to saying
Every relationship has one. Say it now, in this message, so it is never left unsaid by accident.
What he would need to hear first
If the worst happened tomorrow, what is the first sentence your grandson would need from you? Say that first, before anything practical.
What you would tell him at twenty
Pick the one thing you wish someone had told you as a young man and say it plainly, with no lecture around it.
12 prompts to get you talking
Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your grandson; half are about in case something happens.
- 01Which man in the family he never met does he remind you of?
- 02What do you want him to know you were never angry about?
- 03What is a place you took him that you hope he remembers?
- 04Who should he lean on, in your opinion?
- 05What do you hope he is gentler with himself about than you were?
- 06What is your blessing for his life, in one sentence?
- 07What did you think the first time you held your grandson?
- 08If something happened tomorrow, what is the first thing you would want him to hear?
- 09What do you want him to know about being a good man?
- 10What do you want him to do with the first good day after?
- 11What skill or habit do you hope he picks up from you?
- 12What practical thing would make the first week easier for him?
A sample 60-second script
Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.
Hi [name]. I made this so that if anything happened to me, you would have my voice telling you the important things.
The important things are short: [one, two, three sentences].
Lean on [a person or people].
And if you are ever unsure what I would have said about something, it is this: [one line].
I love you. I always will.
When to deliver it
This kind of message is usually delivered by the check-in rather than by a date.
A just-in-case message uses the check-in. You check in on a simple schedule, and if you stop responding and miss the reminders over the grace period, the message is delivered to your grandson. While you are here and checking in, nothing is sent.
Before a specific event, surgery or travel for example, some people also keep the message on hold and release it themselves if needed, or ask a trusted person to. You can delete or re-record it afterward when the worry passes.
Record it while the words are fresh
Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.
Common questions
My grandson is a child now. Can I record a message for in case something happens to you and have it delivered years from now?+
Yes. Record it today, choose the delivery date for the milestone, and it stays sealed and private until that morning. If the date is not known yet, keep it on hold and a parent can release it when the time comes.
What if nothing happens? Does the message to my grandson just sit there?+
Yes, privately and sealed. You can keep it as a standing just-in-case message, update it as life changes, or delete it. Nothing is ever delivered while you are checking in.
Can I change the message later?+
Yes. You can re-record or delete it any time before it is delivered. Once a message has been delivered, it cannot be unsent.
Can anyone else see the message before it is delivered?+
No. The video stays private and sealed until it is delivered to the person you named. Nobody, including our team, can watch it before then. After delivery, only the recipient can view it, and they can save their own copy.
