Why a video message to your mom in case something happens to you matters
Your mom has heard you say thank you a thousand times, usually on the way out the door. A video message is the chance to say it slowly, looking at the camera, with nothing else going on. Most people have thought, at some point, what would she need to hear from me if something happened? This page is about recording that answer while nothing has.
Keep it practical and warm. Say where the important things are if you want, but mostly say what she means to you. Keep it simple and personal. One real memory of her will mean more than any list of compliments.
Three angles to take
Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.
What she would need to hear first
If the worst happened tomorrow, what is the first sentence your mom would need from you? Say that first, before anything practical.
What you carry from her
Name one habit, phrase, or way of treating people that you got from her and still use. Mothers rarely hear which parts of them actually took.
The practical kindnesses
If it helps your mom, say where things are, who to call, what you would want. Keep it brief. The point is to lighten the load, not to run the logistics.
12 prompts to get you talking
Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your mom; half are about in case something happens.
- 01What did she give up for you that she never mentioned?
- 02If something happened tomorrow, what is the first thing you would want her to hear?
- 03What is one meal she made that you would give anything to eat again, and why?
- 04What do you want her to remember about how you lived, not how you left?
- 05When did you first realize she was a person with her own worries, not just your mother?
- 06What is your blessing for her life, in one sentence?
- 07What is the funniest thing she ever did without meaning to be funny?
- 08Who should she lean on, in your opinion?
- 09What would you want her to stop worrying about?
- 10What practical thing would make the first week easier for her?
- 11What is a piece of her advice you ignored and later wished you had taken?
- 12What do you want her to know you were never angry about?
A sample 60-second script
Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.
Hi [name]. I made this so that if anything happened to me, you would have my voice telling you the important things.
The important things are short: [one, two, three sentences].
Lean on [a person or people].
And if you are ever unsure what I would have said about something, it is this: [one line].
I love you. I always will.
When to deliver it
This kind of message is usually delivered by the check-in rather than by a date.
A just-in-case message uses the check-in. You check in on a simple schedule, and if you stop responding and miss the reminders over the grace period, the message is delivered to your mom. While you are here and checking in, nothing is sent.
Before a specific event, surgery or travel for example, some people also keep the message on hold and release it themselves if needed, or ask a trusted person to. You can delete or re-record it afterward when the worry passes.
Record it while the words are fresh
Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.
Common questions
What if my mom and I have a complicated relationship?+
You do not have to pretend. A message for in case something happens to you can be honest and still kind. Say the true things you can say warmly, leave out the rest, and keep it short. Many people find that a two-minute message they actually mean is far better than a longer one that tries to fix everything.
What if nothing happens? Does the message to my mom just sit there?+
Yes, privately and sealed. You can keep it as a standing just-in-case message, update it as life changes, or delete it. Nothing is ever delivered while you are checking in.
Is it free to start?+
Yes. You can record and save your first message for free. Scheduled delivery dates and longer videos are part of the paid plans. Receiving a message is always free and does not require an account.
What if I get emotional while recording?+
Keep going. The messages people treasure are the honest ones, and a cracked voice is honesty. You can also pause, rest, and continue later in the same message.
