Why a video message to your husband for his graduation matters
Marriage is a long conversation with a lot of interruptions. A video message is a few uninterrupted minutes that are only about him. Graduation marks the end of one thing and the start of something nobody can see yet. A message from you can sit right in that gap.
Say what you watched him work for. Graduates hear congratulations all day; what they rarely hear is that someone saw the effort. Keep it short and let it be plain. He will watch it alone and more than once.
Three angles to take
Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.
The next chapter
Say one thing about what comes next, and make it permission rather than a plan. Something like: you do not have to know yet.
What you see when he is not performing
Describe him at his most unguarded, with the kids, with his parents, asleep on the couch, and say that is the version you love.
Your own graduation
Tell him what you were like the day you finished school, or what you wish you had known. It turns advice into company.
12 prompts to get you talking
Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your husband; half are about a graduation.
- 01What do you hope he stops being hard on himself about?
- 02What was he like on the first day of school, and what is he like now?
- 03What is an ordinary evening with him that you would gladly repeat forever?
- 04What is one piece of advice about work or study you wish you had been given at this age?
- 05What did you notice about your husband early on that turned out to be true?
- 06What is the hardest stretch of school you watched him get through?
- 07What is a small habit of his that you would miss most?
- 08What did he learn in these years that had nothing to do with classes?
- 09What have you learned about patience or loyalty from him?
- 10What do you hope he gives himself permission to not know yet?
- 11What do you want him to know about how safe you feel because of him?
- 12What quality of his will matter more than any grade?
A sample 60-second script
Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.
[Name], congratulations. I am recording this [when], and I wanted it to find you on the day.
When you started, you were [one image of him at the beginning]. Look at you now.
Here is one thing I learned after my own graduation that I wish someone had told me: [one honest sentence].
Whatever you do next, [one hope].
I am so proud of you. Today is yours.
When to deliver it
This kind of message is usually delivered on a specific date.
If the graduation date is on the calendar, schedule the message for that morning. If your husband is years away from graduating, you can still record it now and set the date when it is known, or keep it on hold and release it yourself the week of.
Because dated messages are delivered no matter what, a graduation message recorded early is also a quiet way to make sure you are present for a day you might otherwise miss.
Record it while the words are fresh
Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.
Common questions
Will a video message to my husband for his graduation feel too heavy?+
Not if it is honest and short. Say one true thing, tell one story, and end warmly. The messages that feel heavy are the ones that try to say everything at once. Two or three minutes is plenty.
Can I record one graduation message for my husband and reuse it for the next graduation?+
You can, but a short new one for each milestone usually means more. Many families record a few minutes for high school and another few for college, each scheduled for its own date.
Can anyone else see the message before it is delivered?+
No. The video stays private and sealed until it is delivered to the person you named. Nobody, including our team, can watch it before then. After delivery, only the recipient can view it, and they can save their own copy.
How long should the video message be?+
Two to four minutes is plenty. A short message that sounds like you is worth far more than a long one that does not. If you have more to say, record a second message rather than one long one.
