Why a video message to your husband for his wedding day matters
The things a wife most wants her husband to know tend to be said in passing or not at all. A recorded message says them slowly. A wedding day is loud, fast, and over by midnight. A video message is the one part of it he can sit with quietly, the morning of or years later.
Record it well before the day. The week of a wedding is the worst week to find the words. Tell him one thing he did that you have never properly thanked him for. He is probably still wondering if you noticed.
Three angles to take
Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.
What you hope the marriage is like
Skip the wedding and talk about the years after. Name one thing you hope he and his partner protect, and one thing you hope they forgive each other for quickly.
A blessing for two people
End by speaking to both of them. Welcome the new spouse by name, say what you see in them, and give the couple whatever blessing fits your family.
What you see when he is not performing
Describe him at his most unguarded, with the kids, with his parents, asleep on the couch, and say that is the version you love.
12 prompts to get you talking
Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your husband; half are about a wedding day.
- 01What have you learned about patience or loyalty from him?
- 02What is one thing you hope he never stops doing for his partner?
- 03What is a small habit of his that you would miss most?
- 04What do you want him to remember about this morning, years from now?
- 05What is the one sentence you want him to hear on a day you cannot be there?
- 06What is the best marriage you ever witnessed, and what made it work?
- 07What is an ordinary evening with him that you would gladly repeat forever?
- 08What would you tell him about the first hard year?
- 09What is a hard decision he made that you have never thanked him for?
- 10What do you admire about the person he chose?
- 11What did you notice about your husband early on that turned out to be true?
- 12What is one small habit that keeps a marriage warm?
A sample 60-second script
Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.
[Name], it is me. By the time you watch this it is his wedding day, and the house is probably chaos, so I will keep it short.
I remember [a specific memory of him and the person he is marrying, or of him talking about them].
Marriage, as far as I can tell, is mostly [one honest sentence about what it takes].
To [partner's name]: welcome. You are family now, and I mean that.
To both of you: be kind when you are tired. That covers most of it. I love you.
When to deliver it
This message can be delivered on a date, held until you release it, or tied to your check-in.
If the wedding date is set, schedule the message for that morning and it arrives before the day starts. If the date is not set yet, or your husband is not engaged, record it now and keep it on hold. You can release it yourself the moment the day is announced.
Some people also record a wedding message for the check-in, so that if they are not here for the wedding, the message is delivered anyway. Nothing is sent until you choose, or until your check-in lapses after the grace period.
Record it while the words are fresh
Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.
Common questions
Will a video message to my husband for his wedding day feel too heavy?+
Not if it is honest and short. Say one true thing, tell one story, and end warmly. The messages that feel heavy are the ones that try to say everything at once. Two or three minutes is plenty.
What if my husband is not engaged yet?+
Record the message now while you have the words, and keep it on hold. You can set the date later, or release it yourself the week of the wedding. It stays private and sealed until then.
Do I need special equipment to record it?+
No. Any phone, tablet, or computer with a camera works, in the browser, with nothing to install. Find a quiet spot with light on your face, prop the phone up, and talk.
What if I get emotional while recording?+
Keep going. The messages people treasure are the honest ones, and a cracked voice is honesty. You can also pause, rest, and continue later in the same message.
