Why a video message to your husband for when you are gone matters
Your husband probably hears what needs doing more often than he hears what he means to you. A video message is a chance to change the balance, once, in a form he can keep. A message for after you are gone is the one most people mean to record and never do. It does not have to be a goodbye. It can simply be you, talking to your husband, on an ordinary day.
Do not try to say everything. Say one true thing, one story, and one wish. That is a complete message. Be specific. A real moment beats any general compliment.
Three angles to take
Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.
The blessing
Whatever your tradition, end with a blessing. A hope for his life, said once, in your voice, is the part he will play on the hard days.
The thing he got right
Pick one decision he made, or one hard stretch he carried, and say that he got it right. Husbands rarely hear that from the person whose opinion matters most.
The story only you know
Tell one story about your husband or the family that will vanish if you do not. It gives the message a reason to be rewatched beyond grief.
12 prompts to get you talking
Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your husband; half are about after you are gone.
- 01What do you hope he stops being hard on himself about?
- 02What family story will be lost if you do not tell it now?
- 03What does he do with the kids or the family that you quietly watch?
- 04What blessing would you give him if you had one sentence?
- 05What do you want him to know about how safe you feel because of him?
- 06What do you want him to do on the first ordinary morning after?
- 07What is an ordinary evening with him that you would gladly repeat forever?
- 08What did he give you that he may not realize?
- 09What is a small habit of his that you would miss most?
- 10What is one story about him that only you know?
- 11What is a hard decision he made that you have never thanked him for?
- 12What do you want him to hear in your voice on the hardest day?
A sample 60-second script
Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.
Hi [name]. I do not know when you are watching this, but I know I am not there, so let me say the things I would have said.
You were [one true thing about who he was to you].
Here is what I believe about living, in one sentence: [one plain line].
And here is my blessing for you: [whatever fits your family].
That is all. I love you. Thank you for being mine.
When to deliver it
This kind of message is usually delivered by the check-in rather than by a date.
This message is built for the check-in. You check in on a simple schedule, and if you stop responding and miss the reminders over the grace period, the message is delivered to your husband. Nothing is sent while you are here and checking in.
You can also name a trusted person who can confirm the delivery, and you can re-record or add to the message as the years pass. Many people record a fresh one every year or two, so the version delivered is recent.
Record it while the words are fresh
Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.
Common questions
Will a video message to my husband for when you are gone feel too heavy?+
Not if it is honest and short. Say one true thing, tell one story, and end warmly. The messages that feel heavy are the ones that try to say everything at once. Two or three minutes is plenty.
Is a video message for when I am gone the same as a will?+
No. Shtello Legacy is for personal messages, not legal documents. It does not replace a valid will. It is the part a will cannot do: your face and voice, saying the things that matter to your husband.
Can I change the message later?+
Yes. You can re-record or delete it any time before it is delivered. Once a message has been delivered, it cannot be unsent.
Do I need special equipment to record it?+
No. Any phone, tablet, or computer with a camera works, in the browser, with nothing to install. Find a quiet spot with light on your face, prop the phone up, and talk.
