What to say

What to say in a video message to your son for his wedding day

A short, honest video message to your son for his wedding day is one of the few gifts that gets better with time. Here is how to find the words, with prompts and a sample script.

Why a video message to your son for his wedding day matters

You have seen your son at his best and his worst. A short recorded message tells him which one you remember. A wedding day is loud, fast, and over by midnight. A video message is the one part of it he can sit with quietly, the morning of or years later.

If you can, say something about the person he is marrying. It tells your son you are welcoming them both. Keep it short enough that he will watch it twice.

Three angles to take

Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.

The day you saw him in love

Describe the first time you noticed he was really in love, what he said or did, how his face changed. It is a memory he probably does not have of his own.

The thing you want him to hear in your voice

Most sons carry one unspoken question about whether they are enough. Answer it, directly, so he has the recording when he needs it.

What a long marriage actually takes

If you have been married a long time, say one honest thing about what kept it together. If you have not, say what you learned from watching one.

12 prompts to get you talking

Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your son; half are about a wedding day.

  1. 01What is a trait of his that you hope he never loses?
  2. 02What is one thing you hope he never stops doing for his partner?
  3. 03What is the proudest you have ever been of him, and did you tell him at the time?
  4. 04What is one small habit that keeps a marriage warm?
  5. 05What did you get wrong with him that you would like to say out loud?
  6. 06What family story about love or weddings do you want him to carry?
  7. 07What do you hope he is easier on himself about than you were?
  8. 08What is the best marriage you ever witnessed, and what made it work?
  9. 09What do you admire about how he treats people?
  10. 10What would you tell him about the first hard year?
  11. 11What is a story about him that you tell other people?
  12. 12What do you want him to remember about this morning, years from now?

A sample 60-second script

Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.

[Name], it is me. By the time you watch this it is his wedding day, and the house is probably chaos, so I will keep it short.

I remember [a specific memory of him and the person he is marrying, or of him talking about them].

Marriage, as far as I can tell, is mostly [one honest sentence about what it takes].

To [partner's name]: welcome. You are family now, and I mean that.

To both of you: be kind when you are tired. That covers most of it. I love you.

When to deliver it

This message can be delivered on a date, held until you release it, or tied to your check-in.

If the wedding date is set, schedule the message for that morning and it arrives before the day starts. If the date is not set yet, or your son is not engaged, record it now and keep it on hold. You can release it yourself the moment the day is announced.

Some people also record a wedding message for the check-in, so that if they are not here for the wedding, the message is delivered anyway. Nothing is sent until you choose, or until your check-in lapses after the grace period.

Record it while the words are fresh

Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.

Common questions

My son does not say much about feelings. Will he actually watch a message for his wedding day?+

Almost always, and usually alone, more than once. Keep it short and direct, do not ask him to respond, and let it be about him rather than about the two of you. That is the version sons replay.

What if my son is not engaged yet?+

Record the message now while you have the words, and keep it on hold. You can set the date later, or release it yourself the week of the wedding. It stays private and sealed until then.

Can anyone else see the message before it is delivered?+

No. The video stays private and sealed until it is delivered to the person you named. Nobody, including our team, can watch it before then. After delivery, only the recipient can view it, and they can save their own copy.

What if I get emotional while recording?+

Keep going. The messages people treasure are the honest ones, and a cracked voice is honesty. You can also pause, rest, and continue later in the same message.
