Why a video message to your best friend in case something happens to you matters
Your best friend has seen the real you more than most of your family has. A short video lets you say what that has meant. People record just-in-case messages before surgery, before a long trip, before a deployment, or simply because they have been meaning to. The reason does not matter. The recording does.
Keep it practical and warm. Say where the important things are if you want, but mostly say what they mean to you. Lead with the memory that still makes you both laugh. Then say the serious thing.
Three angles to take
Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.
The practical kindnesses
If it helps your best friend, say where things are, who to call, what you would want. Keep it brief. The point is to lighten the load, not to run the logistics.
Chosen family
Say plainly that you consider them family, and why. It is the sentence friends mean for decades and almost never say.
What they would need to hear first
If the worst happened tomorrow, what is the first sentence your best friend would need from you? Say that first, before anything practical.
12 prompts to get you talking
Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your best friend; half are about in case something happens.
- 01What do you hope they stop doubting about themselves?
- 02If something happened tomorrow, what is the first thing you would want them to hear?
- 03What do you admire about them that you have never said?
- 04What is a thing you always meant to say and did not?
- 05What do they know about you that nobody else does?
- 06What do you want them to do with the first good day after?
- 07What would you want their family to know about what they did for you?
- 08Who should they lean on, in your opinion?
- 09What habit of theirs drives you crazy and you would miss anyway?
- 10What practical thing would make the first week easier for them?
- 11What is the one sentence you want them to hear on a day you cannot be there?
- 12What is your blessing for their life, in one sentence?
A sample 60-second script
Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.
Hi [name]. I hope you never see this. I am recording it [when, why: before a trip, before surgery, just because], and I wanted it to exist.
If you are watching, something happened. So first: [the one sentence they need to hear].
Practical things: [where to find what matters, who to call, or skip this line].
I need you to [one permission: live, laugh, not feel guilty].
I love you. That is the whole message, really.
When to deliver it
This kind of message is usually delivered by the check-in rather than by a date.
A just-in-case message uses the check-in. You check in on a simple schedule, and if you stop responding and miss the reminders over the grace period, the message is delivered to your best friend. While you are here and checking in, nothing is sent.
Before a specific event, surgery or travel for example, some people also keep the message on hold and release it themselves if needed, or ask a trusted person to. You can delete or re-record it afterward when the worry passes.
Record it while the words are fresh
Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.
Common questions
Can I send a video message to my best friend for in case something happens to you even if they do not have an account?+
Yes. Receiving is always free and needs no account. They get a private link by email or text and the video plays in any browser. Only they can open it.
What if nothing happens? Does the message to my best friend just sit there?+
Yes, privately and sealed. You can keep it as a standing just-in-case message, update it as life changes, or delete it. Nothing is ever delivered while you are checking in.
Do I need special equipment to record it?+
No. Any phone, tablet, or computer with a camera works, in the browser, with nothing to install. Find a quiet spot with light on your face, prop the phone up, and talk.
How long should the video message be?+
Two to four minutes is plenty. A short message that sounds like you is worth far more than a long one that does not. If you have more to say, record a second message rather than one long one.
