Why a video message to your brother for when you are gone matters
Your brother remembers the same house, the same parents, the same arguments. A recorded message is a way to say you are glad he was there. A message for after you are gone is the one most people mean to record and never do. It does not have to be a goodbye. It can simply be you, talking to your brother, on an ordinary day.
Do not try to say everything. Say one true thing, one story, and one wish. That is a complete message. Start with a shared memory. The drive, the fight, the basement. Let that do the warming up.
Three angles to take
Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.
What you want him to stop worrying about
Name the thing you know he will carry after you are gone, guilt, a regret, a question, and release him from it, in plain words.
The ordinary you
Resist the urge to be profound. Talk the way you talk on a Tuesday. The ordinary voice is the one your brother will ache for.
The witness
Tell him what it meant to have someone who went through the same childhood. Name one moment only the two of you remember.
12 prompts to get you talking
Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your brother; half are about after you are gone.
- 01What did he see in your childhood that your parents missed?
- 02What do you want him to hear in your voice on the hardest day?
- 03What do you want his kids to know about their dad?
- 04What do you want him to stop feeling guilty about?
- 05What do you hope he forgives you for?
- 06What do you want him to do on the first ordinary morning after?
- 07What is a memory only you and your brother share?
- 08What did he give you that he may not realize?
- 09What did he do for you growing up that you never thanked him for?
- 10What blessing would you give him if you had one sentence?
- 11What is the one sentence you would want him to hear if you could not be there?
- 12What do you believe about what matters, said simply?
A sample 60-second script
Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.
Hi [name]. I do not know when you are watching this, but I know I am not there, so let me say the things I would have said.
You were [one true thing about who he was to you].
Here is what I believe about living, in one sentence: [one plain line].
And here is my blessing for you: [whatever fits your family].
That is all. I love you. Thank you for being mine.
When to deliver it
This kind of message is usually delivered by the check-in rather than by a date.
This message is built for the check-in. You check in on a simple schedule, and if you stop responding and miss the reminders over the grace period, the message is delivered to your brother. Nothing is sent while you are here and checking in.
You can also name a trusted person who can confirm the delivery, and you can re-record or add to the message as the years pass. Many people record a fresh one every year or two, so the version delivered is recent.
Record it while the words are fresh
Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.
Common questions
My brother and I are not close. Is a video message for when you are gone still worth recording?+
Often it is exactly the thing that helps. Keep it short, keep it kind, and do not try to settle old accounts. One honest sentence about what he means to you can do more than years of silence.
Is a video message for when I am gone the same as a will?+
No. Shtello Legacy is for personal messages, not legal documents. It does not replace a valid will. It is the part a will cannot do: your face and voice, saying the things that matter to your brother.
Can anyone else see the message before it is delivered?+
No. The video stays private and sealed until it is delivered to the person you named. Nobody, including our team, can watch it before then. After delivery, only the recipient can view it, and they can save their own copy.
How long should the video message be?+
Two to four minutes is plenty. A short message that sounds like you is worth far more than a long one that does not. If you have more to say, record a second message rather than one long one.
