What to say

What to say in a video message to your daughter when she has her first baby

A short, honest video message to your daughter when she has her first baby is one of the few gifts that gets better with time. Here is how to find the words, with prompts and a sample script.

Why a video message to your daughter when she has her first baby matters

A daughter hears a lot of instructions growing up and not nearly enough of what her parent actually thinks of her. A video message fixes that ratio. When your daughter becomes a parent, she will suddenly understand things about you that she never could before. A recorded message can meet her there.

Do not give instructions. New parents are drowning in them. Give reassurance and one story. Avoid advice unless she asked. The message that lands is the one that simply says what she means to you.

Three angles to take

Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.

A message for the baby

Record a second short piece, speaking to the baby directly, to be opened years later. Say who you are and how wanted this child was.

What you hope she never doubts

Name the one thing about herself you hope she never questions. Say it directly, once, so she has your voice saying it whenever she needs it.

The night she was born

Tell her what it was like when she arrived, or what you remember of her earliest weeks. She is about to understand that story for the first time.

12 prompts to get you talking

Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your daughter; half are about a first baby.

  1. 01What was the first thing you noticed about your daughter that was entirely her own?
  2. 02What do you remember about the first week after a baby in your own life?
  3. 03What is the one sentence you would want her to hear on a bad day?
  4. 04What do you want the baby to know about her, years from now?
  5. 05What is a trait she got from you that you hope she keeps, and one you hope she drops?
  6. 06What is one thing about her character that will make her a good parent?
  7. 07What do you most admire about the woman she has become?
  8. 08What do you want her to know about the fear that comes with a newborn?
  9. 09What do you hope she forgives herself for?
  10. 10What does she not need to worry about, in your experience?
  11. 11What do you want her to know about choosing the people she keeps close?
  12. 12What is the one sentence you want her to hear at three in the morning?

A sample 60-second script

Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.

[Name], it is me. There is a new person in the family, and I wanted to say a few things while it is fresh.

When you were born, [what you remember or were told about that day].

You do not have to be perfect. [One sentence of reassurance.]

If it gets hard, remember [one thing: that it passes, that you can call, that everyone feels this].

Welcome to the club. I love you both.

When to deliver it

This message can be delivered on a date, held until you release it, or tied to your check-in.

If the due date is known, you can schedule the message for a day or two after. Many people prefer to keep it on hold and release it themselves once the baby has arrived, so the timing is right.

If you want the message to reach your daughter at her first baby even if you are no longer here, record it for the check-in as well. If you stop checking in, the message is delivered after the grace period, and your daughter hears from you at the moment she most wants to.

Record it while the words are fresh

Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.

Common questions

Should a video message to my daughter for when she has her first baby include advice?+

A little, if it is specific and kind. Most daughters say the part they replay is the part where a parent simply says what they see in her. Lead with that, add one piece of advice if you must, and stop.

My daughter does not have children yet. Should I still record a first-baby message?+

Yes, if the thought moves you. Record it now, keep it on hold, and release it when the baby comes. If you are not here by then, a trusted family member or the check-in can deliver it for you.

Is it free to start?+

Yes. You can record and save your first message for free. Scheduled delivery dates and longer videos are part of the paid plans. Receiving a message is always free and does not require an account.

What if I get emotional while recording?+

Keep going. The messages people treasure are the honest ones, and a cracked voice is honesty. You can also pause, rest, and continue later in the same message.
