What to say

What to say in a video message to your granddaughter for her graduation

A short, honest video message to your granddaughter for her graduation is one of the few gifts that gets better with time. Here is how to find the words, with prompts and a sample script.

Why a video message to your granddaughter for her graduation matters

You know family stories your granddaughter has never heard and may not ask about until you are gone. A recorded message hands them to her now. Graduation mornings are rushed: gowns, parking, photos. A recorded message gives your granddaughter a few calm minutes that belong only to her.

Keep it short. She will have a dozen people to see that day, and a two-minute message gets watched twice. Tell her where she comes from. One story about her great-grandparents, or about the day her parent was born, gives her roots.

Three angles to take

Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.

The work you saw

Name one late night, one hard semester, one moment she nearly quit and did not. Tell her you saw it. That is the sentence graduates keep.

The family thread

Tell her about one person in the family she never met, and which part of that person you see in her. It gives her a place in a longer story.

What a diploma does not measure

Tell her what you admire that no transcript shows: how she treats people, what she does when nobody is watching.

12 prompts to get you talking

Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your granddaughter; half are about a graduation.

  1. 01Which relative she never met does she remind you of, and how?
  2. 02What do you remember about your own graduation day, honestly?
  3. 03What do you want her to remember about your house?
  4. 04What was she like on the first day of school, and what is she like now?
  5. 05What did she say or do as a small child that you still laugh about?
  6. 06What quality of her will matter more than any grade?
  7. 07What did you think the first time you held your granddaughter?
  8. 08What is one piece of advice about work or study you wish you had been given at this age?
  9. 09What is one piece of advice about love you wish someone had given you at her age?
  10. 10What do you want her to hear from you on the morning of graduation?
  11. 11What do you most hope for her life, said in one sentence?
  12. 12What do you hope she gives herself permission to not know yet?

A sample 60-second script

Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.

[Name], congratulations. I am recording this [when], and I wanted it to find you on the day.

When you started, you were [one image of her at the beginning]. Look at you now.

Here is one thing I learned after my own graduation that I wish someone had told me: [one honest sentence].

Whatever you do next, [one hope].

I am so proud of you. Today is yours.

When to deliver it

This kind of message is usually delivered on a specific date.

If the graduation date is on the calendar, schedule the message for that morning. If your granddaughter is years away from graduating, you can still record it now and set the date when it is known, or keep it on hold and release it yourself the week of.

Because dated messages are delivered no matter what, a graduation message recorded early is also a quiet way to make sure you are present for a day you might otherwise miss.

Record it while the words are fresh

Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.

Common questions

My granddaughter is still very young. Can I record a message for her graduation now and have it delivered when she is older?+

Yes. That is one of the main reasons the service exists. Record it today, set the delivery date for the milestone, and it stays sealed until then. Nobody, including our team, can watch it before delivery.

Can I record one graduation message for my granddaughter and reuse it for the next graduation?+

You can, but a short new one for each milestone usually means more. Many families record a few minutes for high school and another few for college, each scheduled for its own date.

Can anyone else see the message before it is delivered?+

No. The video stays private and sealed until it is delivered to the person you named. Nobody, including our team, can watch it before then. After delivery, only the recipient can view it, and they can save their own copy.

Can I change the message later?+

Yes. You can re-record or delete it any time before it is delivered. Once a message has been delivered, it cannot be unsent.
