What to say

What to say in a video message to your granddaughter in case something happens to you

A short, honest video message to your granddaughter in case something happens to you is one of the few gifts that gets better with time. Here is how to find the words, with prompts and a sample script.

Why a video message to your granddaughter in case something happens to you matters

A granddaughter gets a version of you that her parents never did: the patient one, the one with time. A video message lets her keep that version. Most people have thought, at some point, what would she need to hear from me if something happened? This page is about recording that answer while nothing has.

You will probably never need it to be delivered. That is the best outcome, and the message still did its job: it let you stop worrying. Tell her where she comes from. One story about her great-grandparents, or about the day her parent was born, gives her roots.

Three angles to take

Pick one. A message that tries to do all three usually does none of them well.

The practical kindnesses

If it helps your granddaughter, say where things are, who to call, what you would want. Keep it brief. The point is to lighten the load, not to run the logistics.

What she would need to hear first

If the worst happened tomorrow, what is the first sentence your granddaughter would need from you? Say that first, before anything practical.

What you want her to know about herself

Grandparents see a child clearly. Tell her the strength you noticed early, with one example, so she has your voice confirming it.

12 prompts to get you talking

Answer two or three of these on camera and you have a message. Half are about your granddaughter; half are about in case something happens.

  1. 01Which relative she never met does she remind you of, and how?
  2. 02What is a thing you always meant to say and did not?
  3. 03What do you most hope for her life, said in one sentence?
  4. 04If something happened tomorrow, what is the first thing you would want her to hear?
  5. 05What do you hope she is braver about than you were?
  6. 06What do you want her to know you were never angry about?
  7. 07What is a story about her parent as a child that she would love to know?
  8. 08Who should she lean on, in your opinion?
  9. 09What did she say or do as a small child that you still laugh about?
  10. 10What do you want her to do with the first good day after?
  11. 11What is one piece of advice about love you wish someone had given you at her age?
  12. 12What is your blessing for her life, in one sentence?

A sample 60-second script

Replace the bracketed parts with your own words. Read it once, then put it down and talk.

Hi [name]. I hope you never see this. I am recording it [when, why: before a trip, before surgery, just because], and I wanted it to exist.

If you are watching, something happened. So first: [the one sentence she needs to hear].

Practical things: [where to find what matters, who to call, or skip this line].

I need you to [one permission: live, laugh, not feel guilty].

I love you. That is the whole message, really.

When to deliver it

This kind of message is usually delivered by the check-in rather than by a date.

A just-in-case message uses the check-in. You check in on a simple schedule, and if you stop responding and miss the reminders over the grace period, the message is delivered to your granddaughter. While you are here and checking in, nothing is sent.

Before a specific event, surgery or travel for example, some people also keep the message on hold and release it themselves if needed, or ask a trusted person to. You can delete or re-record it afterward when the worry passes.

Record it while the words are fresh

Free to start. Record on any phone, choose who it is for, and decide when it arrives.

Common questions

My granddaughter is still very young. Can I record a message for in case something happens to you now and have it delivered when she is older?+

Yes. That is one of the main reasons the service exists. Record it today, set the delivery date for the milestone, and it stays sealed until then. Nobody, including our team, can watch it before delivery.

What if nothing happens? Does the message to my granddaughter just sit there?+

Yes, privately and sealed. You can keep it as a standing just-in-case message, update it as life changes, or delete it. Nothing is ever delivered while you are checking in.

Can I change the message later?+

Yes. You can re-record or delete it any time before it is delivered. Once a message has been delivered, it cannot be unsent.

What if I get emotional while recording?+

Keep going. The messages people treasure are the honest ones, and a cracked voice is honesty. You can also pause, rest, and continue later in the same message.
